What are Attention Deficit Disorder and Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder?
Attention Deficit Disorder (ADD) and Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder (ADHD) are neurodevelopmental disorders characterized by symptoms of inattention, hyperactivity, and impulsivity. Though they share many similarities, there are distinct differences, primarily in the presence of hyperactivity.
Attention Deficit Disorder (ADD): ADD is an earlier term primarily used to describe individuals who have problems with attention but are not necessarily hyperactive or impulsive. People with ADD often struggle with maintaining attention, are easily distracted, may have difficulty organizing tasks, and often seem not to listen when spoken to directly. They may also struggle with following instructions and failing to finish schoolwork or workplace duties. ADD is less about a lack of attention and more about difficulty regulating one’s attention to fit the task at hand.
Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder (ADHD): ADHD includes all the symptoms of ADD, with the addition of hyperactivity and impulsiveness. Hyperactivity in ADHD manifests as excessive fidgeting, talking, or difficulty remaining seated and calm in appropriate situations. Impulsivity can involve hasty actions without considerable thought, which can lead to high-risk behaviors.
There are three subtypes of ADHD recognized:
- Predominantly Inattentive Presentation: Similar to what was formerly known as ADD. This includes individuals who primarily struggle with inattention and are easily distracted but don’t necessarily display hyperactive or impulsive behaviors.
- Predominantly Hyperactive-Impulsive Presentation: Individuals mainly exhibit hyperactive and impulsive behaviors, with less emphasis on inattention.
- Combined Presentation: This is where individuals display both inattentive and hyperactive-impulsive symptoms.
The causes of ADD/ADHD are not fully understood but are believed to involve genetic factors, brain structure and function, and environmental influences. Treatment often includes behavioral therapies, medications, and support in the home and educational settings.

At Riverbend Pediatric Therapy, we specialize in ABA therapy, which is a cornerstone of our approach to helping children with Attention Deficit Disorder (ADD) and Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder (ADHD). Our services are designed to meet the unique needs of each child, aligning with our mission to deliver tailored, high-quality care for meaningful and lasting outcomes.
ABA Therapy for ADD/ADHD: Our Board Certified Behavior Analysts (BCBAs) play a crucial role in managing and treating ADD/ADHD. ABA therapy, known for its effectiveness in autism spectrum disorders, is also highly beneficial for children with ADD/ADHD. Our BCBAs develop personalized treatment plans to enhance attention, improve organizational skills, and reduce impulsive behaviors. Through consistent, positive reinforcement techniques and structured behavioral interventions, we help children learn to manage their symptoms and develop skills necessary for success in daily activities.
Pediatric Occupational Therapy Integration: Alongside ABA therapy, our pediatric occupational therapists collaborate closely with BCBA specialists to provide a comprehensive treatment approach. Occupational therapy can be particularly beneficial for children with ADD/ADHD, focusing on improving their fine motor skills, sensory processing, and executive functioning. Our occupational therapists work to enhance a child’s ability to perform daily tasks, improve their concentration, and cope with sensory sensitivities. This multidisciplinary approach ensures a holistic development focus.
Our Core Values in Action: In every aspect of our treatment for ADD/ADHD, we adhere to our core values of care, compassion, integrity, inclusion, and safety. We create an environment where children can be themselves, fostering learning, respect, and growth.
