Effective Behavioral Interventions in ABA Therapy

All children misbehave sometimes–that’s just a part of growing up. However, when a child’s behavior challenges stem from developmental delays or other underlying conditions, managing their behavior can become challenging. Applied Behavior Analysis (ABA) therapy could be a solution. It harnesses the power of positive reinforcement to offer several effective behavioral interventions.
With its structured approach and use of rewards, ABA therapy can significantly improve a child’s development and daily life. However, it’s also effective in addressing challenging behaviors, such as difficulties with communication, social interactions, following directions, and more.
At Riverbend Pediatric Therapy, our ABA-informed pediatric therapists teach children to replace problematic behaviors with positive ones, gaining the skills they need to thrive at home, school, and in the community.

An ABA Success Story: How Our Effective Behavior Interventions Helped Ben
Meet Ben
Ben (not his real name) was a bright and energetic six-year-old boy who frequently misbehaved. He had trouble following instructions and didn’t get along well with his peers. He also often threw tantrums when he became overwhelmed.
As you might expect, these behaviors made it hard for him to succeed in school and social settings. His parents had read about ABA therapy and brought him to Riverbend Pediatric Therapy to give it a try.
Ben’s Personalized Treatment Program
We began with a thorough assessment to understand Ben’s specific situation, including identifying the triggers for Ben’s behaviors. We discovered that Ben often became frustrated when he couldn’t communicate his needs.
This information helped us create the right program for Ben. We incorporated ABA techniques such as positive reinforcement and discrete trial training, which involves breaking down tasks into small, manageable steps and then teaching each step individually.
For example, we didn’t just teach Ben to ask for help. Instead, we first taught him to make eye contact. Next, we trained him to say, “I need help.” Finally, we had him combine both actions. We celebrated each successful attempt with praise and small rewards, like playing with some of the toys in our clinic, which meant Ben enjoyed the learning process, too.
In fact, this positive reinforcement was key in reducing Ben’s tantrums. Ben received immediate positive feedback whenever he displayed appropriate behavior, such as using words instead of crying. Ben began associating good behavior with positive outcomes, encouraging him to repeat those behaviors.
What Was the Result?
Over several months, Ben made remarkable progress. His tantrums decreased significantly, and he became more confident in expressing himself, including asking for help when he didn’t understand instructions at school. His improved communication skills also helped him make new friends at school.
ABA therapy offered several effective behavioral interventions that transformed Ben’s behavior–but also brought relief and joy to his family.
